Dizziness/balance problems
Dizziness can be regularly experienced and can last for a few minutes or for as long as a few days. In conjunction with the dizziness, headaches, blurred vision, light-headedness, nausea and in some instances faintness can be present too.
It has been theorised that the dizziness experienced is linked to the body’s inability to circulate blood as effectively as it should, resulting most notably in a lack of blood flow to the brain. I, myself, have often found that the dizziness I have suffered from is linked with the muscles tightening in my neck and shoulders. If I don’t find ways to relieve the tension then it can spread into the muscles in my jaw and head.
In more severe cases vertigo may be experienced which is a very different sensation where you feel as though you’re spinning, floating or whirling. It can be very disorientating and very debilitating. This can also be linked with problems with the inner ear and should always be checked out.
Unsteadiness often happens at the same time as dizziness and can make you feel as if you are off-balance. You may experience what is referred to as disequilibrium, resulting in you staggering a bit, knocking into things or even falling down.
Fainting, or near fainting, may be accompanied by blurred vision or even sudden blackouts in vision and is due to a lack of blood flow to the brain.
Your GP can prescribe different medications to help with both dizziness and vertigo if necessary; however, they generally tend to cause drowsiness or blurred vision, rendering you incapable of doing anything. It’s also important to consider whether any existing medication has dizziness listed as a potential side-effect, especially ones to lower blood pressure, sedatives, anti-anxiety medication, decongestants and antihistamines.
There are natural supplements and herbs which may be beneficial but which won’t knock you out. One of the most popular ones is ginger root which can provide quick relief. Ginkgo Biloba has been shown to boost blood flow to the brain and may also be very useful, although it can take between 2-3 months for the full effects to be felt. Ensuring adequate levels of B vitamins are incorporated into your daily diet is also very important as they – especially vitamin B6 – are essential for the normal functioning of the brain and nervous system.
Other supplements that could be considered are valerian, kudzu and feverfew.
