Leaky Gut Syndrome

Leaky gut syndrome essentially means that there is a weakness in the stomach and the stomach lining can become inflamed and more permeable, i.e. food particles can work their way through the stomach wall and then travel around the body.  It not only affects the intestinal tract, causing such symptoms as bloating, discomfort and flatulence but it can contribute to a whole host of other conditions, depending on the severity.

First and foremost a leaky gut can result in nutritional deficiencies, as nutrients are not effectively absorbed into the intestinal wall.  It can increase the levels of toxins, which in turn places a greater strain on the liver, resulting in more toxins circulating all parts of the body.  These toxins may then settle in tissue and muscle as they build up and the body is unable to remove them.

There are a number of dietary factors that can contribute to this syndrome, including alcohol, caffeine, the use of NSAID’s (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen), spicy food, food additives and a diet high in refined carbohydrates and sugar.

Several amino acids are helpful including glutamine and cysteine, and aloe vera – which contains all of the amino acids and a number of other nutrients – is often recommended for helping heal a leaky gut due to its powerful and soothing anti-inflammatory properties.

A deficiency of Zinc and Vitamin A can also be common with this syndrome.

In addition to aloe, another very powerful and vital herb is milk thistle (Silymarin).  Milk thistle is most well-known for its ability to heal and protect the liver from toxins, but it also has strong anti-inflammatory powers that help heal the gut lining.  It is also an excellent anti-oxidant and increases the body’s levels of glutathione – another recognised deficiency for Fibro sufferers.

Finally stress reduction is vital for a healthy digestive system, so any steps to minimise stress can have a huge impact, including simple techniques such as meditation and deep breathing exercises.
